Stirling Engine for Pappalardo Lab Apprenticeship

I was selected to participate in program offered by MIT’s Pappalardo Teaching Laboratory called the Pappalardo Apprenticeship where Juniors and Seniors are given the opportunity to refine their machining skills through practice and the mentorship of others.

Drawings

I was given a set of engineering drawings which I used to manufacture the parts for the engine. Since the drawings were old and hard to read, I remade many of them such as this one.

CAD Model

I made CAD models from the drawings that helped me to visualize how the engine was going to come together.

Final Engine

Inspired by my love of motorcycles, I wanted to make a 2-cylinder engine. Many shop hours and machines later, I designed and manufactured a parallel twin Stirling engine.

Engine Running

This video shows the engine running with two alcohol burners providing heat.
